As we navigate the month of October, we are called to shine a light on another critical issue affecting countless lives within our communities and beyond: Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This insidious issue often hides in plain sight, impacting individuals and families regardless of age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status.
As members of the National Supreme Council A. & A.S.R.M. and the National Grand Chapter, O.E.S., we are committed to justice, compassion, and the well-being of all. It is our duty to speak out and act against all forms of violence and abuse.
The Ask: Pick a Day, Wear Purple, Raise Awareness
Throughout October, we urge every single member to choose ONE day to visibly demonstrate your unwavering support for survivors and your commitment to ending domestic violence.
On your chosen day in October, we ask you to WEAR PURPLE.
- When: Select a specific day within October that works best for you, your Lodge, your Chapter, or your Council. We encourage organizations to coordinate a unified "Purple Day" to maximize impact!
- What: Incorporate the color purple into your attire. This can be:
- A purple tie, pocket square, or lapel pin.
- A purple ribbon.
- A purple shirt, blouse, or scarf.
- Purple accessories
Why Purple? Why "Love Doesn't Hurt"?
The color purple has long been recognized as the symbol of domestic violence awareness. By wearing purple, we:
- Stand in Solidarity with Survivors: We show survivors that they are not alone, that their experiences are seen, and that they have a community that believes and supports them.
- Raise Critical Awareness: Our visible display prompts conversations, educates others about the signs of abuse, and helps to break the silence and stigma surrounding domestic violence.
- Reinforce Our Theme: "Love Doesn't Hurt": This powerful message reminds us all that true love is built on respect, equality, and safety, never on fear, control, or violence. It's a call to foster healthy relationships and reject abusive patterns.
- Support Vital Resources: Many local domestic violence shelters, hotlines, and support services rely on public awareness and charitable contributions. Our efforts highlight their crucial work.
- Uphold Our Principles: Our fraternal organizations are founded on principles of respect, justice, and charity. Taking a stand against domestic violence is a direct embodiment of these core tenets.
Take Action and Share Your Support!
We strongly encourage every Lodge, Chapter, and Council to pick a day, promote this initiative within your ranks, and discuss the importance of healthy relationships.
➡️ On your chosen "Purple Day," take a photo of yourself, your Lodge, or your Chapter proudly wearing purple and share it online!
